Jeff Fortney, Governing Board Vice President

My family moved to Cave Creek in 1999 from the Chicago suburbs. My son is a 2003 graduate of Cactus Shadow High School. Soon my grandson will be a Desert Willow Roadrunner. This is very exciting for me because DWES is where I began my 2nd career as a special education teacher. After 20 years in the computer industry, I received my Bachelor's and Master's degrees – in special education and literacy, respectively – from Arizona State University. I taught in CCUSD for 8 years (Desert Willow and Sonoran Trails).  I currently teach in the Tolleson Elementary School District. Besides teaching, I have been an advocate for public school funding in Arizona for several years. I have been actively involved in following legislation regarding public education and supported legislators and candidates for local office that support this cause. I ran for the CCUSD governing board because I believe the perspective of an educator currently in the classroom on a daily basis, is critical when making decisions regarding the classroom and the community – with students, teachers and families guiding every decision.
