Welcome to First Grade!
Welcome to my first grade classroom! I am glad to be your child's teacher for such an exciting year of learning! This is my 34th year of teaching. I taught kindergarten for one year and have spent thirty-three years in 1st grade - where I really like to be! I have been teaching at Desert Willow since it opened 20 years ago and for the past 16 years have been proud to teach in the Spanish Immersion program. I look forward to sharing this milestone year of learning with your 1st grader! It is my wish that your child will love 1st grade as much as I do!
1st Grade Homework
*Read at least 15-20 minutes every day! (The only way your child will become a fluent reader is through practice, practice, and a little more practice!)
*Spelling lists will be sent home each Monday in a packet to guide your practice. Please work on these words at home so your child knows them well for the spelling test each Friday. The packets do not need to be returned to school.
*Help your child to complete our monthly reading goals. Signed reading slips should be sent back to school upon completion.
*Work on Fundations packets as they come home. They do not need to be returned to school. (It will help you to become familiar with what your child is currently working on, and will help your child practice phonics and handwriting skills as well as learn high-frequency words and spelling patterns which will be tested in class.)
*Complete reading lessons in Smarty Ants. (We will be working on another learning platform for reading in the classroom.)
**Homework expectations may evolve over time as we fine tune the learning needs of our students with our new curriculums. Please check out our Friday newsletter to see what your child is working on each week.
Thank you for working with your child at home! Time spent on learning now will pay off for a lifetime!
