Welcome to the worlds of Government and American History.  These are the course areas that my classes focus on. These are two very important areas of learning because as future citizens, our students need to know about our country's history and how our government functions.

On this site you will find many helpful resources for the classes that I teach at Cactus Shadows High School. You will be able to review course syllabi, keep track of assignments, find articles for current events commentaries, get project forms, and check your grades and much more. I hope that you find this site useful as you study government and history. I have found that these topics are intricately linked, both are useful in shaping a better world.

I first became interested in economics during my 30 years of experience in corporate America. After finishing my undergraduate degree in political science at The University of Arizona, I headed for California where I worked full time while attended the Executive MBA Program at the UCLA Anderson School of Business. My business career started after finishing at UCLA.  I accepted a position as the product manager on Bufferin, a consumer package goods product produced by the Bristol Myers Company in New York City...quite a change for a Tucson, Arizona native.  After many years of climbing the corporate ladder and living in many different cities, I ended up in Minneapolis, Minnesota as the North American Vice-President, Managing Director of the Haagen-Dazs Shops Company. At that time, it was a global division of the Pillsbury Company. When I left the Pillsbury Company, I had a brief stop at Planet Hollywood as the division president for a new company call, Cool Planet.  This was my last "real job", before deciding to retire, but early retirement was too early for me...free time has never been my friend.

Having always been a life learner who enjoyed the classroom, I decide to go back to school (again!) and earned my Master of Arts in Education with an emphasis in Secondary Education from the University of Phoenix. Teaching government, economics, and history  at the high school level was my goal and that goal was realized when I was offered the opportunity to begin my second career at Desert Mountain High School...a school loaded with outstanding teachers and wonderful students. But, after two great years at Desert Mountain, there was a reduction in Desert Mountain enrollment and being one of the newest teachers on staff, a reduction in force left me looking for my next position.  Fortunately for me, Cactus Shadows High School had an opening to teach AP Government, regular Government and American/Arizona History. I was offered the position and jumped at the opportunity to join the team at a great school like Cactus Shadows High School. This will be my first year at Cactus Shadows and I will be teaching Government, AP Government and American/Arizona History...and I can't wait for the school year to get started!

On a personal note, I met my lovely wife, Linda in 1998 and we were married in 2000. We have a beautiful blended family with four fantastic grown children: Grant, Jeff, Brooke and Nolen. Plus, we have a wonderful little German Wirehair Pointer, named Raina, and she runs the Carpenter household. I am an avid reader, an addicted fisherman (especially fly fishing), I love upland game bird and duck hunting and I played college football at New Mexico Military Institute and the University of Arizona , and as you can imagine, I love Arizona basketball and any sports team that has anything to do with the University of Arizona...go Wildcats, Bear Down!
