A Commitment to a PK-12 Pathway

  • When Spanish immersion students complete 6th grade at Desert Willow School, they continue in an Immersion pathway at Sonoran Trails Middle Schools for 7th and 8th grade. To remain in the program, Spanish immersion students must take a daily Spanish Language arts course and then either one or both electives that are offered in Spanish on an every other day schedule. The two new elective courses are:

    • Digital Media in the Spanish Speaking World
    • History in Culture in the Spanish Speaking World

By the end of 8th grade, Spanish Immersion pathway students have completed the high school Spanish Levels 1/2 and 3/4. At Cactus Shadows High School, immersion students are clustered together (depending on individual scheduling needs) and have one daily class in Spanish. They enter 9th grade in Spanish Level 5/6 Honors and are able to take their AP/IB courses by 11th grade. 12th grade offers these students a Spanish Capstone class with proficiency targets in the Advanced Low/Mid range. Once immersion students reach the university, they are usually just a few courses away from a minor in the language.
