Ms. Joanne Spiess
Before teaching, I spent five years as an exploration geologist in precious metals and worked with the United States Geological Survey for one year as a hydrologist. In my capacity as a hydrologist, I was fortunate enough to have lived and worked in various places in the Grand Canyon for four months, actually getting paid to raft down the Colorado River.
I am even more fortunate now - to be able to share my love of science with my students!

All students are unique and learn in many different ways. Therefore, my role as a teacher is to present a curriculum that incorporates many different learning styles. Doing “hands on” activities is certainly a big part of science. We also read, write, observe, listen, draw, and discuss. Engaging in critical thinking is a must. And all the while have fun doing so!
