Superintendent's Letters

June 2024 Letter to the Community

Dear Parents, Community & CCUSD Staff –

Below is the Superintendent’s graduation speech to the remarkable 2024 graduates of Cactus Shadows High School!

I am honored and humbled to stand here before you tonight as we celebrate this tremendous milestone. As your Superintendent this year, in my heart, I believe this night belongs to you, and as such I debated long and hard about even giving a speech. But then something occurred to me: would you please raise your hand if you attended Sonoran Trails Middle School - you are the only students over the course of my 12 years as principal there that I did not get to lead your promotion ceremony and send you off to high school.

Sure, we recorded a virtual one and what about  the wooden letters covered by your pictures and a life-size cardboard cutout of me that you could take a picture next to in front of the school?

Even if you did not attend Sonoran Trails, I know your life was also turned upside down in 2020.  With those events 4 years ago, I could not pass up this opportunity to send you off into the next chapter of your life - LIVE and IN PERSON!

You see, life does have a way of balancing out.

When you face life’s obstacles - and you will because we all experience them - my advice to everyone is that you MEET, GREET and DEFEAT these challenges. You all MET an unprecedented challenge in COVID that tested all our resolve and our strength. You GREETED the challenges from virtual classrooms to canceled events, facing obstacles that generations before you could not imagine. You DEFEATED the challenges by navigating uncharted waters, persevering through uncertainty, fear and upheaval with courage, creativity, flexibility, determination, and optimism.

Each of you has proven that you can do hard things. You, the graduating class of 2024, have demonstrated the ability to rise above adversity and find new ways to succeed. Your ability to adapt to ever-changing circumstances is a skill that will serve you well as you leave the nest and embark on your future endeavors.

As you move forward into the next chapter of  your lives, I want you to know that I believe the future is bright and I believe the future is hopeful because the future is in YOUR capable hands. Yes, you, sitting in those caps and gowns, are the future leaders, innovators, and change-makers of tomorrow. You possess the power to shape a better world, to create positive change, and to inspire others to do the same. I urge you to hold fast to your dreams, to pursue your passions with unwavering determination, and to never lose sight of the extraordinary potential that lies within each and every one of you.

In the words of Helen Keller, “Optimism is the faith that leads to achievement.  Nothing can be done without hope and confidence.” So graduates, go forth with hope in your heart, confidence in your abilities, and the knowledge that the world is  yours for the taking.  I has been a pleasure being your Superintendent and I wish you all the best in the future of your choosing.

Congratulations, class of 2024, the world awaits and I have no doubt that you will leave an indelible mark upon it.

Together,
Bill Dolezal
Superintendent
