Mrs. Kristin Cardin

I am delighted to be teaching first grade at Black Mountain Elementary School. This will be my 35th year as an educator, with 13 years in the Cave Creek Unified School District.  My teaching journey began as a young child.  I was the little girl who gathered the neighborhood kids to sit in my garage “classroom” to play school.  I continued to pursue my passion for teaching by following in my grandmother’s footsteps and graduated from the University of Northern Iowa with a degree in Elementary Education.  After graduation, I married my amazing husband, RJ, and we moved to Arizona.  I received my Master of Education Degree in Elementary Education from Arizona State University.  Soon after, we welcomed our daughter into our little family.  For most of my career I have taught kindergarten, first, and second graders.  I love how naturally curious young children are about the world.  I have also enjoyed being a reading teacher, English Language Learner teacher, and Response to Intervention Coordinator.  With the support of my family, peers, and BMES community, in 2013, I became a National Board Certified Teacher as an Early Childhood Generalist.

Outside of teaching, I LOVE hanging out with my family and pets.  In March 2022, our daughter got married and we welcomed our new son-in-law into our family.  In addition, we have two sweet dogs, Nahla and Max.  I enjoy traveling, reading, movies, camping, and nature hikes.  I am in awe and inspired by the natural world, like sunsets in the desert and moonbeams on Half Dome in Yosemite.

  • I aspire to create a positive, engaging, and inclusive learning environment where my students are encouraged to explore and take risks.  I believe there are five essential elements that are conducive to a successful learning environment.  (1) The teacher must build strong relationships by making connections with each student.  Every child must believe that the teacher cares about them. When students feel safe and cared for they are more likely to embrace challenges.  (2) Students should know what is expected of them with an established routine and consistent procedures.  (3) Student choice is a powerful motivator that leads to increased engagement and ownership of learning.  (4)  All students bring different strengths and challenges.  Targeted instruction/personalized learning helps meet the needs of all students.  (5) A multisensory, hands-on, inquiry-based approach gives students more than one way to learn new concepts and think critically.  I believe all children are unique learners and it is my responsibility to help make learning achievable so each child can reach their full potential.
