What Do STMS School Counselors Do?

  • At Sonoran Trails Middle School, our School Counselors base their student services off of the American School Counselor Association National Model.  Our counseling program is a collaborative effort benefitting students, parents, teachers, administrators, and the Cave Creek community.

As part of the delivery of student services, our school counselors provide direct services including school counseling core curriculum, individual student planning, and responsive services.  We also provide indirect student services on behalf of students including referrals for additional assistance, consultation and collaboration with parents, teachers, other educators, and community organizations.

    School Counseling Curriculum

Our school counselors visit classrooms in 7th and 8th grades about once per month throughout the school year.  We focus our lessons on Social/Emotional, Career, and Academic domains in order to attain the desired competencies and to provide all students with the knowledge, attitudes, and skills appropriate for their level of development.

In order to ensure our students are knowledgeable and responsible with the growing technology at their fingertips, we have partnered with Digital Citizen Academy.  Digital Citizen Academy (DCA) has developed a comprehensive online module program for middle and high school students emphasizing responsible technology use.   Beginning with an in-depth review of the importance of digital citizenship, students gain more knowledge about why it is important to demonstrate ethical behavior, adhere to social media safety guidelines and take responsibility for their use of social media.  Modules focus on sensitive problems and social issues such as cyberbullying, inappropriate texting behaviors, digital cheating and digital reputation help students understand the legal and long term consequences of these offenses and how to avoid and report behaviors considered harmful.  Both 7th and 8th grade students will be participating in DCA curriculum.

    Individual Student Planning

We provide students and parents the opportunities to meet one-on-one with the school counselors as needed, small groups in the fall and spring semesters, counseling lessons within the classroom environment, and unique after-school and evening events for students and parents.
