Gifted Testing

  • Because of the Covid protocols, changes have been made to gifted testing for the 2021-2022 school year.

    --- Testing in smaller groups
    --- Testing at district office

Testing results will be used to qualify students for the Creative Inquiry Gifted program.

Students who have taken the CogAT within the last 365 days are not eligible to take the test until 1 year from prior administration has passed.

Please fill out this form if you are interested in having your child take the Gifted Test (Cognitive Abilities Test).

    About the Test

CCUSD, in compliance with state requirements, conducts gifted referral testing three times per year using the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT).  The test is not an achievement test, but a measure of reasoning  ability in specific aptitude areas. This test measures learned reasoning and problem-solving skills in three different areas: verbal, quantitative, and nonverbal.  The verbal section has three subtests, which focus on reasoning skills, flexibility and fluency.  The quantitative section tests the child's understanding of basic quantitative concepts and relationships that are essential for learning mathematics.  The nonverbal section helps to see how students look for shapes and patterns.

Results from the tests will provide teachers with information to inform and differentiate instruction. 3rd-8th grade students who score at or above the 97th percentile in any one or more of the three areas will also be eligible for the Creative Inquiry class. 2nd Grade Gifted Blanket Testing

CCUSD usually administers blanket tests to all second grade students at the end of January.
However, due to the unusual circumstances of this year, we will determine when and if students will take the blanket test on a "wait and see" basis. We will post a date here as soon as we know for sure what we will be able to do. Thank you!
