Mrs. Lorraine Burke

Meet Mrs. Burke

Hello students and parents! I am Mrs. Lorraine Burke, and I am so pleased to be able to work with you this year!

I have taught English Language Arts in the Cave Creek Unified School District for 39 years. I am a National Board Certified Teacher. I have taught every grade level and course from 6th grade Language Arts to 12th grade Advanced Placement English, including at Black Mountain Elementary, Cactus Shadows High School, and Sonoran Trails Middle School.  I "retired" in 2013 and then promptly came back to do three long-term substitute positions, ending the year substituting for Mrs. Pope at STMS when she had her baby. I enjoyed teaching 7th grade again so much that when Mrs. Pope decided to stay at home to enjoy being a mom, I requested to take her place for the 2013-2014 school year. (You can take the teacher out of the classroom, but it is very difficult to take the classroom away from the teacher!) Then I took a true year-long sabbatical (I've given up saying "retired") 2014-2015 and returned to teach 10th grade again in 2015-2016.  In 2016-2017 I continued my work with 10th graders as well as returning to teach Honors 9th grade which is one of my all-time favorite levels with which to work. I am continuing to teach 9th grade English. This year we are using an exciting curriculum for Pre-AP English! I am doing what I love, and I am here to help students and parents have a productive and happy year. Welcome to my class and my ever-growing community of "my kids."

Other background:

I was raised in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan in Marquette, so I am what some have come to call a "Yooper" meaning someone from the U.P. I attended Northern Michigan University in the Upper Peninsula and finished my degree at Central Michigan University in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan. I moved to Arizona in 1978 and live in Black Canyon City.

In addition to my professional life at CCUSD, I have been a district parent. My daughter, Emily, attended the district Preschool Program, Desert Sun Elementary School, Black Mountain Elementary School, Sonoran Trails Middle School, and Cactus Shadows High School. After graduating from CSHS with the AIMS scholarship, she attended Northern Arizona University, graduating with majors in English and Anthropology and a minor in French. She completed her Masters Degree at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana and is currently working on her PhD in Folklore at IU. My husband is an author of two books: The Blue Moon Boys: The Story of Elvis Presley's Band and Country Music Changed My Life: Tales of Tough Times and Triumph from Country's Legends. He is a contributor to multiple biographical encyclopedias and magazines. We are animal lovers and currently the parents of our "fur-babies" Jack the Puppy and Mickie and Minnie our kittens.
