Technology is an essential component in our classroom. Due to recent events surrounding the coronavirus, the use of technology for distance learning has become absolutely vital. As we start the school year through virtual means, the students will be spending the first few weeks learning how to navigate our new learning management system known as Canvas. Once the students become confident enough in their abilities to use the system, we will move on to our Life Skills content. We here at the PALS program of Sonoran Trails Middle School ask for your patience and support through setting examples for your son/daughter by approaching this new tool with an open mind and willingness to learn.
When we return to face-to-face instruction on campus, we will continue to utilize Canvas. I will have laptops and tablets that the students can borrow for educational use and to ensure their success in the classroom. Please understand that while I love technology as much as the next person, I strongly believe that personal electronics (i.e. smartphones, Nintendo Switches) are more of a distraction than a tool in the middle school classroom. Therefore, unless it is a device that was agreed to be appropriate to use by the IEP team for student accommodation and modification, there are not needed and should not be in use during instructional time.
We will be using some form of technology almost every day to enhance learning as the school year progresses.
