Spanish Program Description & PK-12 Pathways
-
DSA is designated as a Spanish pathway for PK-6 students that continue learning this language at Sonoran Trails Middle School in 7th and 8th grades. Our local BMES Spanish teacher delivers language and culture classes to students for 20-30 minutes twice a week engaging them through music, movement, stories, culture and critical thinking using over 90% Spanish during class. This program allows students to meet the following goals:
- Develop basic oral proficiency with a focus on real life speaking and listening
- Gain an appreciation of cultures different from their own
- Feel confident about learning a new World Language
Understanding CCUSD World Language PK-12 Pathways:
DSA students continue their study of Spanish at Sonoran Trails Middle School (STMS) for 7th and 8th grade. Over the course of 7th and 8th grade, STMS students will mirror a Spanish 1/2 (level 1) high school class. Consequently, 9th grade students can continue studying Spanish at Cactus Shadows High School by starting 9th grade in a Chinese 3/4 class (level 2) as long as their proficiency level supports that placement. This prepares them to arrive at the Advanced Placement (AP) Chinese or International Baccalaureate (IB) Spanish levels by their 12th grade year. AP and IB courses are university level courses that can grant students university credit based on final exams. The CCUSD World Language goal is to graduate students with a level of professional proficiency, meaning that graduates would have enough proficiency to use the language within their career/profession.
Alternative CCUSD World Language Pathways:
Students that would like to transfer out of Spanish and into French or Chinese, can do so when registering for 7th grade classes at Sonoran Trails Middle School. Those DSA students that would like to transfer out of Spanish and into Chinese can do so in 9th grade or can apply for a waiting list in 7th and 8th grade as Horseshoe Trails and Lone Mountain Elementary are the designated Chinese PK-8 pathway schools.
