The Superintendent's Challenge:  Community Service/Service Learning

In the quest to open up possibilities to our students, Dr. Burdick has issued a challenge for high school students to earn up to 50 hours or more per year in Community Service/Service Learning to earn an annual Community Service/ Service Learning certificate.  Students who meet the challenge all four years of high school and/or earn 200 hours or more in Community Service/Service Learning, will earn a Community Service/Service Learning graduation cord to wear at graduation, in addition to a certificate documenting time and effort spent supporting the community and learning to be global citizens.

Students interested in meeting the Superintendent's Challenge will need to first find an advisor [CSHS Staff member].  The next steps include completing a Superintendent's Challenge Application.  Please follow instructions on Application for submission to Superintendent's office. 

If you are a senior, Community Service/Service Learning hours should be turned in to Dr. Burdick no later than April 20th of your senior year so that you are included in the graduation pamphlet.  If you are an underclassman, your Community Service/Service Learning hours should be turned into Dr. Burdick by the first Monday in May of each school year so that we may present you with your certificate.

Thank you for mentoring our youth. Students will share their Commnity Service/Service Learning application and hour log with you.  Please sign off on their hour log and send to the Superintendent's office via inter-office mail.

Learn and Serve:  "Connecting Youth with Service" through the Arizona Department of Education's partnership with Learn and Serve will provide advisors with many resources.

The Governor's Division for Community and Youth Development manages and distributes funding and works to support issues around National Service programs (including AmeriCorps and Community Based Learn and Serve grants), service learning, volunteerism, positive youth development, and youth workforce development throughout Arizona.  The Division houses the Governor's Commission on Service and Volunteerism and the Governor's Youth Commission.

Kids Voting is a non-profit, non-partisan, voter education program committed to creating lifelong voting habits in children.  The organization provides materials to teach how elections are conducted in Arizona and allows schools to submit the election results of their student populations.  Schools sign up to participate.
